The Justice Department’s inspector general released a report Thursday criticizing the FBI for failing to take the “basic step” of canvassing its field offices for intelligence ahead of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
The report revealed controversial details about the presence of 26 confidential human sources (CHSs) in Washington that day. Although the report claims none were instructed by the FBI to incite violence or break the law, four entered the Capitol, and 13 others accessed restricted areas. Most CHSs attended on their own initiative, with only three specifically tasked to monitor domestic terrorism subjects.
“None of the CHSs who entered the Capitol or a restricted area has been prosecuted to date”, the report reads.
Over 1,500 individuals have been charged for their roles in the Capitol breach. FBI struggles with technology and internal communication were highlighted, with obstacles attributed to the chaotic threat environment during Trump’s final days in office.
