House lawmakers in both parties joined forces Saturday to send a $95.3 billion package of foreign aid to the Senate, ending a long stalemate over the fate of the legislation. The package passed with a vote of 311-112, with all “nay” votes from Republicans.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) brought four bills to the floor aimed at delivering overseas assistance. He separated these funds from a separate border security bill, which did not garner enough support during Saturday's votes.
Johnson characterized the aid as a fundamental and imperative continuation of America's commitment to supporting democratic allies facing challenges from authoritarian regimes.
