Menendez blames gold bar and cash hoarding on ‘generational trauma’

by | May 2, 2024

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) has presented a novel explanation for the discovery of a significant amount of gold and cash during a raid on his home by law enforcement officers.

Menendez's legal team contended that “generational trauma and a propensity to hoard reserves” were factors contributing to the senator's possession of the stash. This explanation comes as Menendez faces accusations of selling his influence and receiving substantial amounts of cash and gold in return.

His defense team asserted that the $480,000 in cash and 13 gold bars discovered at his residence were attributable to a behavioral pattern stemming from psychological trauma related to his father's suicide and a family history of confiscated assets in Cuba.

The accumulation of cash and gold is perceived as a “coping mechanism” that Menendez purportedly reserved for “emergencies.” The gold was valued at an additional $100,000, according to the indictment.

Menendez's trial is set to commence on May 13, while his wife will undergo a separate trial. Both Menendez and his wife, along with two business associates implicated in the case, have pleaded not guilty.

A psychologist is anticipated to testify regarding these new assertions.
