House panel investigating Trump assassination attempt requests staff briefings from key agencies

by | Aug 12, 2024

The bipartisan House task force investigating the attempted assassination of President Trump is taking its first official action by requesting staff briefings from key agencies.

Reps. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.) and Jason Crow (D-Colo.), the chair and top Democrat of the task force, sent letters on Monday to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe Jr., Attorney General Merrick Garland, and FBI Director Christopher Wray. They asked for any documents or records previously provided to the House and Senate.

In addition, Kelly and Crow are requesting briefings from the FBI, DHS, Secret Service, and DOJ to review their responses to Congress and discuss the task force’s priorities regarding future document and information requests. They have requested that these briefings be scheduled as soon as possible, but no later than August 16, 2024.

The House established the bipartisan task force late last month to centralize the investigation, which had previously been spread across multiple committees. The letters emphasize that the task force’s requests take precedence over any previous House requests related to the July 13 shooting investigation.
