French Authorities Escalate Criminal Probe Into Elon Musk, X

by | May 9, 2026

French cybercrime prosecutors have expanded an investigation into Elon Musk and social media platform X into a criminal probe, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.

Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino were reportedly summoned by French authorities for questioning on April 20 but declined to appear.

The investigation, requested earlier this year by French lawmaker Éric Bothorel, centers on allegations that X manipulated algorithms to influence French politics and knowingly allowed users of AI chatbot Grok to generate Holocaust denial content and nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfake images.

The U.S. Department of Justice reportedly informed French authorities in April that it would not assist in the investigation and accused France of improperly targeting an American company.
