President Trump announced Thursday that he is nominating Jay Clayton, the former Securities and Exchange Commission chairman and current U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, to serve as Director of National Intelligence.
Trump described Clayton as “very highly respected,” noting his prior leadership at the SEC and his career at Sullivan & Cromwell, calling him one of the most prominent figures in the legal community.
The president urged the Senate to move quickly on his confirmation, saying Clayton should be approved “as soon as possible” to join his Cabinet in the intelligence post.
The Southern District of New York, where Clayton currently serves as U.S. Attorney, previously led the federal prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein on sex trafficking charges.
