DOD Secretary Austin to undergo procedure, will transfer duties to deputy

by | May 24, 2024

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is set to undergo a medical procedure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday evening, as announced by Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.

The elective and minimally invasive procedure addresses bladder issues that emerged in December after Austin's prostate cancer treatment.

Maj. Gen. Ryder clarified that the procedure is unrelated to Austin's previous cancer diagnosis and does not impact his positive cancer prognosis. During Austin's medical procedure, he will temporarily transfer his duties to his deputy to ensure continuity of leadership.
