Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with President Trump lasting roughly 90 minutes, according to Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, marking their 12th conversation since Trump returned to office in early 2025.
During the call, Putin told Trump he is prepared to declare a ceasefire during Victory Day celebrations on May 9, an idea Ushakov said Trump “actively supported,” noting the holiday marks the shared victory over Nazism in World War II. The two leaders also discussed the Ukraine conflict, with Trump stating that “a deal that would put an end to the conflict in Ukraine is already within reach” and emphasizing the need to end hostilities quickly while continuing dialogue with both Moscow and Kiev.
Ushakov said both leaders shared similar views on the actions of Ukraine’s leadership, accusing Kiev of prolonging the conflict with backing from European countries, while Putin reiterated that Russia’s objectives would be achieved and could be reached through negotiations if Ukraine responds to existing proposals.
The conversation also focused heavily on Iran, with Putin backing Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire and warning of “extremely harmful consequences” if the United States or Israel resumes military action, calling a ground operation “unacceptable and dangerous.” The leaders also discussed broader cooperation, including potential joint economic and energy projects.
Putin additionally expressed support for Trump following a recent assassination attempt, condemning politically motivated violence, and asked that birthday wishes be passed along to First Lady Melania Trump. Both sides agreed to maintain ongoing contact through direct conversations and discussions between aides and envoys.
