As immigration-fueled unrest continues to escalate in Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass is once again facing criticism over her long-documented ties to pro-Cuban revolutionary groups.
Bass’s past affiliations have resurfaced amid the chaos, particularly her involvement with the Venceremos Brigade—a group that promotes socialist revolution and was created to oppose U.S. policy toward Cuba. In 1973, Bass traveled to Cuba with the group and later praised Fidel Castro, calling him “comandante en jefe” following his death in 2016, and describing it as a “great loss to the people of Cuba.” She also reportedly delivered a eulogy for a senior member of the Communist Party USA and was described by Tablet Magazine as the leader of the Brigade’s southern California chapter.
As violent protests and law enforcement crackdowns continue, online critics have revived allegations about Bass’s role in the organization, accusing her of advancing revolutionary ideals and calling for a federal investigation into her political history. One post claimed she was “trained in revolutionary warfare and subversion,” while others accused her of embracing violence and holding views incompatible with American values.
