Chinese leader Xi Jinping will visit North Korea next week, marking his first trip there in nearly seven years, according to announcements from both governments.
State media said Xi will make a two-day state visit from Monday to Tuesday. His last visit to Pyongyang was in June 2019. The trip follows recent high-profile meetings in Beijing between Xi and President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The visit comes after Pyongyang unveiled a facility believed to produce nuclear material, with Kim Jong Un pledging to expand the country’s nuclear forces “at an exponential rate.”
Xi last met Kim Jong Un in Beijing in September, where the two leaders pledged closer cooperation.
