House Judiciary committee releases Brazilian court orders to X

by | Apr 19, 2024

The House Judiciary committee has made public confidential Brazilian court orders instructing the social media platform X to suspend accounts, revealing decisions that have led to accusations of censorship from the company and its owner, Elon Musk.

The committee shared multiple rulings by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, directing X to suspend or remove roughly 150 user profiles from its platform in recent years. This disclosure came as a result of committee subpoenas directed at X. De Moraes had previously prohibited X from publicly disclosing these orders.

The confidential orders revealed by the congressional committee originated from both Brazil’s Supreme Court and its top electoral court, which de Moraes currently heads. The Supreme Court's press office declined to comment on the possible implications of their disclosure when approached by The Associated Press.

In response to its obligations under U.S. law, X Corp. has provided a response to the Committee, the company stated in an announcement on X on April 15th.

The revelation emerges amidst an ongoing conflict Musk has been engaged in with de Moraes.

Musk, known for his stance as a self-proclaimed free-speech absolutist, had pledged to make public de Moraes' orders, characterizing them as censorship. His campaign has garnered support from backers of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who claim they are victims of political persecution and have aligned themselves with like-minded individuals in the U.S.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, the Supreme Court's press office clarified that the orders do not include justifications. However, it stated that the company and individuals with suspended accounts can request access to the decisions from the court.

Following the release of the court orders late Wednesday, Bolsonaro concluded a speech at a public event by calling for a round of applause for Musk. The audience enthusiastically complied.
