US Puts Forward Ceasefire Principles, Trump Presses Hamas to Accept Deal

by | Sep 8, 2025

The United States has presented new principles for a Gaza ceasefire that call for the immediate release of all hostages and the launch of negotiations for a comprehensive end to the war, according to CNN, citing two Israeli officials familiar with the discussions.

Hamas confirmed Sunday it had received “some ideas” from the US through mediators and said it “welcomes any move that helps efforts to stop the aggression against our people.” The group reiterated its readiness to negotiate the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for a binding Israeli commitment to end the war, withdraw its forces from Gaza, and allow a Palestinian-led administration of the territory. It insisted any deal must include an explicit public commitment from Israel.

One Israeli official said the US principles require Hamas to release all 48 hostages on the first day of a ceasefire, with Israel freezing its assault on Gaza City. Negotiations for a permanent end to the war would begin immediately, and fighting would not resume while talks continued. The official added that President Trump would guarantee the ceasefire holds as long as negotiations remain active.

“Everyone wants the Hostages HOME. Everyone wants this War to end!” Trump wrote on social media Sunday evening. “The Israelis have accepted my Terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well.” He called it his “last warning.”

Trump posted while attending the US Open in New York alongside son-in-law Jared Kushner and US envoy Steve Witkoff, both involved in Mideast peace talks. Shortly after reports of the principles aired on Israel’s Channel 12, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel is “seriously considering President Trump’s proposal,” adding that Hamas appears set to continue its refusal.
