President Trump will meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland on Sunday for talks on transatlantic trade, as the two sides approach a key deadline in ongoing negotiations.
“Following a good call with POTUS, we have agreed to meet in Scotland on Sunday to discuss transatlantic trade relations, and how we can keep them strong,” von der Leyen posted Friday on X.
Trump, who will remain in Scotland until Tuesday, told reporters earlier in the day that the odds of reaching a new trade deal with the European Union before the August 1 deadline were “50/50.” “We’re working very diligently with Europe, the EU, which covers a lot of dirt, a lot of countries. And that’s the big one right now,” he said.
The Trump administration has announced a 30% tariff on EU goods set to take effect August 1. European officials have threatened retaliatory measures if the tariffs move forward.
Trump has previously accused the EU of treating the U.S. unfairly and claimed the bloc was created to “screw” America.
