President Trump has reassigned responsibility for Greenland from U.S. European Command to U.S. Northern Command, a move the Pentagon says will reinforce America’s Arctic defense and sharpen focus on homeland security.
The decision, confirmed Tuesday by the Pentagon, places Pituffik Space Base—America’s northernmost military installation—under Northern Command’s oversight. The base, located north of the Arctic Circle, is central to U.S. and NATO missile warning and space surveillance missions.
“The President recently ordered a change to the Unified Command Plan,” said Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell. “This change will strengthen the Joint Force’s ability to defend the U.S. homeland, contributing to a more robust defense of the western hemisphere and deepening relationships with Arctic allies and partners.”
Formerly known as Thule Air Base, Pituffik is run by the U.S. Space Force and plays a key role in the NORAD missile warning system.
