Trump Initiates Call With Putin to Discuss Iran Conflict and Ukraine War

by | Mar 9, 2026

President Trump initiated a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin today, focusing on Iran and the war in Ukraine, according to Russian officials.

Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Putin, said the conversation involved a substantive exchange on Iran. Putin offered proposals aimed at a political and diplomatic resolution and expressed positive views of U.S. mediation efforts in Ukraine. Ushakov described the discussion as “businesslike, frank and constructive.”

Also today, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse claimed Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff are working behind the scenes on a potential peace agreement between Putin and Trump that he argues would favor Russia, citing “leaked phone calls” as the source.
