Trump Budget to Reshape DOJ, Slash FBI and ATF, Refocus on Crime and Border Security

by | May 2, 2025

President Trump’s fiscal year 2026 budget proposal aims to overhaul the Justice Department by slashing funding for politicized or “weaponized” programs and redirecting resources toward fighting violent crime and illegal immigration.

Trump plans to send the full budget request to Congress on Friday, with Breitbart News reporting details on significant DOJ reforms as part of the administration’s broader “law and order” agenda.

The proposed budget would impose deep cuts on the FBI, targeting headquarters operations and programs such as the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and various domestic intelligence-gathering efforts. Funding would be eliminated for initiatives that monitored parents at school board meetings and traditionalist Catholic groups—practices that were politically motivated under the Biden administration.

Instead, Trump’s FBI budget would boost field operations, enhance intelligence sharing with other agencies, and increase support for counternarcotics efforts. Management authority would be decentralized, giving more power to Special Agents in Charge nationwide. No law enforcement officer positions would be cut.

At the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Trump budget proposes a 30 percent reduction in funding, focusing the agency on cracking down on illegal firearms trafficking and violent gangs like MS-13. Programs seen as punitive to lawful gun owners, such as pistol brace regulations and Federal Firearms License revocations, would be defunded.

U.S. Attorneys would see increased resources to prosecute firearms crimes, organized crime, and offenses committed by illegal aliens. The budget also prioritizes the prosecution of state and local officials who obstruct federal immigration enforcement. U.S. Marshals would receive more funding to apprehend violent criminals and protect the judiciary.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) would shutter offices in low-priority foreign locations and shift focus to the fentanyl crisis and domestic drug trafficking networks.

Trump’s plan also eliminates funding for “woke” initiatives, including those aimed at addressing perceived racism, toxic masculinity, and disparities in policing. Restorative justice programs and efforts that targeted Americans for exercising First Amendment rights would be defunded.

The proposal calls for increased investment in local law enforcement hiring and community safety initiatives. It would also scale back spending under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), ending funding for LGBTQI and criminal justice reform components, and restoring the program’s original focus.
