President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation Friday, according to a statement from China’s Foreign Ministry. The discussion comes just days before Trump’s inauguration on Monday, with U.S.-China relations poised to be a central focus of Trump’s second term.

Trump confirmed the call on Truth Social, describing it as “a very good one for both China and the U.S.A.” He noted that their conversation touched on trade, the fentanyl crisis, TikTok, and other key issues. “President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!” Trump wrote.

The president-elect has vowed to impose 60% tariffs on all Chinese imports, signaling a tough stance on trade. He has also praised his relationship with Xi in the past and suggested that China could play a role in resolving global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine.

Xi is not expected to attend Trump’s inauguration. Instead, China will be represented by Vice President Han Zheng at the event.

In a December interview on Meet the Press, Trump revealed that he had been in communication with Xi since his election victory, describing their rapport as “very good.” While Taiwan was not a topic of discussion, Trump said the two leaders addressed other pressing issues.
