Trump Administration Seeks Removal of Judge Boasberg From Deportations Case

by | Mar 17, 2025

The Trump administration has asked the D.C. Circuit to remove Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg from the Venezuelan deportations case, arguing that he improperly turned it into a class action suit. The DOJ also stated that the government “cannot and will not” be compelled to address national security matters at today’s hearing.

DOJ Deputy Assistant Attorney General Drew Ensign stated, “The Government cannot—and will not—be forced to answer sensitive questions of national security and foreign relations in a rushed posture without orderly briefing… Answering them, especially on the proposed timetable, is flagrantly improper.”

Ensign further argued, “This Court should also immediately reassign this case to another district court judge given the highly unusual and improper procedures—e.g. certification of a class action involving members of a designated foreign terrorist organization.”

On Saturday, Texas Republican Representative Brandon Gill announced on X—formerly Twitter—his intention to file articles of impeachment aimed at removing Boasberg. He indicated that the motion would be submitted this week. Elon Musk followed up with a single-word reply: “Necessary.”
