FBI Director Kash Patel is moving to release a decade-old investigative file involving Rep. Eric Swalwell and a suspected Chinese intelligence operative, directing agents in the bureau’s San Francisco field office to expedite redactions ahead of a potential public disclosure.
Patel has also reassigned multiple FBI agents to revisit the matter, with internal discussions reportedly exploring steps to build a criminal case, including the possibility of sending agents to China to interview the woman at the center of the earlier probe. Officials have also discussed the possibility of facilitating a U.S. visa for Fang in exchange for cooperation with investigators.
The individual, Christine Fang, also known as Fang Fang, interacted with Swalwell and other California politicians between 2011 and 2015 and was reported to have had a personal relationship with him during that period, assisting with fundraising for his 2014 reelection campaign and helping place an intern in his congressional office, according to prior findings.
