Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and his family have been granted U.S. visas after he left Brazil rather than surrender his passports under a Supreme Court order.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered Bolsonaro to surrender his regular and diplomatic passports within 24 hours following Sunday’s presidential runoff against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro said police informed him of the order in person and that he had been barred from leaving Brazil.
President Trump questioned the results of Brazil’s presidential runoff, calling the election “another rigged election” and criticizing a two-hour extension of voting. Trump previously imposed tariffs on Brazil over legal proceedings against Flávio’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison for “plotting a coup” after the 2022 election.
