Trudeau Announces Cabinet Shuffle as Liberal Leadership Faces Turmoil

by | Dec 20, 2024

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a significant cabinet shuffle Friday, appointing eight new ministers and adjusting the roles of four others, CBC News reports.

The shake-up follows the unexpected resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, which has energized efforts within the Liberal caucus to challenge Trudeau’s leadership. A senior government source emphasized that the changes should not be interpreted as Trudeau finalizing any decision about his future, noting he is still “reflecting” on his role.

Meanwhile, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh announced plans to introduce a non-confidence motion in the next House of Commons sitting, stating, “The Liberals don’t deserve another chance.”

Key Cabinet Changes:

  • Anita Anand retains her role as Minister of Transport while adding the Internal Trade portfolio.
  • Gary Anandasangaree continues as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, with an added role overseeing the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency.
  •  Steven MacKinnon becomes Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Labour.
  •  Ginette Petitpas Taylor is named President of the Treasury Board.

New Cabinet Members:

  • Rachel Bendayan: Minister of Official Languages and Associate Minister of Public Safety.
  • Élisabeth Brière: Minister of National Revenue.
  •  Terry Duguid: Minister of Sport and Minister Responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada.
  • Nathaniel Erskine-Smith: Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities.
  • Darren Fisher: Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence.
  • David McGuinty: Minister of Public Safety.
  • Ruby Sahota: Minister of Democratic Institutions and Minister Responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
  •  Joanne Thompson: Minister of Seniors.
