Lt. Gen. Joe McGee, director for Strategy, Plans, and Policy on the Joint Staff, left his Pentagon post earlier this month, following months of reported disagreements with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine.
McGee, a Biden nominee, often clashed with leadership over issues including Russia and U.S. military operations in the Caribbean. The military has not commented on the reported tensions. McGee’s departure follows a series of high-profile shake-ups under the Trump administration, including the firing of a general responsible for an intelligence report on U.S. airstrikes in Iran.
US Southern Command’s Adm. Alvin Holsey is also reportedly planning to retire this year after disagreements over missile strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean, despite serving only one year in the position.
