Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is scheduled to visit Washington on November 10, where he is expected to meet with President Trump at the White House, U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack told Axios.
The visit will mark the first time a Syrian president has ever visited the White House and represents a significant milestone in restoring diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Barrack said al-Sharaa plans to sign an agreement joining the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS during his visit. The announcement follows the Trump administration’s recent expression of support for Congress to permanently lift the “Caesar sanctions” imposed on Syria.
The Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, enacted in June 2020, targeted individuals and entities connected to the Syrian government, particularly in the energy, construction, and financial sectors.
The last visit by a senior Syrian official to the White House occurred in December 1999, when then–Foreign Minister Farouq al-Sharaa participated in peace talks with Israel.
Barrack also confirmed that a fifth round of direct U.S.-mediated negotiations between Israel and Syria is expected to follow al-Sharaa’s visit. He said the administration aims to finalize a border security agreement between the two countries by year’s end.
