Steven Cheung Named White House Communications Director

by | Nov 15, 2024

Steven Cheung, who served as Donald Trump’s principal spokesperson during the 2024 campaign and previously worked on Trump’s 2020 and 2016 campaigns, is set to become the White House communications director, according to a source familiar with the decision.

Cheung has been a constant presence in Trump’s inner circle, playing a critical role within the campaign led by Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita. Known for his sharp-edged messaging, Cheung, a former communications professional with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, became a trusted ally to Trump, often issuing scathing statements that echoed Trump’s combative style. Though he kept a low public profile, Cheung’s communications were instrumental in Trump’s aggressive strategy during the GOP primary, including his early attacks on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Cheung, 42, was raised in California by Chinese immigrant parents. His career in Republican politics spanned multiple campaigns before he joined the UFC and then Trump’s 2016 presidential bid. After Trump’s victory, Cheung served as special assistant to the president and assistant communications director. He returned for Trump’s 2020 reelection and subsequently consulted on high-profile GOP campaigns before rejoining Trump for the 2024 race.

Despite his reputation for issuing fiery critiques of “fake news,” Cheung and the 2024 campaign team maintained working relationships with the media. He collaborated with senior Trump campaign communicators and advisers, including Jason Miller, Danielle Alvarez, Brian Hughes, and spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.

Trump also announced this week that Taylor Budowich, another longtime spokesperson, will assume the role of deputy chief of staff for communications and personnel. The press secretary position remains unfilled, with several candidates reportedly under consideration.
