Senate Republicans pushed President Trump’s sweeping spending bill back to the House on Monday, marking a major step toward getting the legislation signed into law. Nearly every GOP senator backed the bill, with only Thom Tillis, Rand Paul, and Susan Collins breaking ranks. No Democrats supported the measure.
Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote to secure passage, after a weekend of intense floor drama, late-night amendments, and failed Democratic attempts to block the bill. GOP leaders had worked to win over holdouts like Collins and Lisa Murkowski with last-minute concessions folded into a final “wraparound” amendment.
The House now faces internal divisions, with Freedom Caucus members calling the bill’s spending cuts insufficient and moderates raising concerns over Medicaid reductions. Despite the pushback, Republican leadership says they remain determined to deliver the bill to Trump’s desk by Friday.
