President Trump has formally nominated Army Lt. Gen. Joshua Rudd to serve as director of the National Security Agency and commander of U.S. Cyber Command, the Defense Department announced Thursday.
The NSA and Cyber Command have operated without a permanent leader for months following the April removal of Gen. Timothy Haugh, with Lt. Gen. William Hartman serving as acting head since then. The Senate received President Trump’s nomination of Rudd for promotion to general earlier this week.
The NSA, a combat support agency overseen by both the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Defense Department, focuses on signals intelligence, foreign surveillance, and cyber operations.
In the same announcement, the Defense Department said Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Lorna Mahlock was nominated to serve as deputy commander of U.S. Cyber Command.
