Pentagon Moves to Formalize Palantir’s Maven AI System as Long-Term Military Program

by | Mar 23, 2026

Palantir Technologies’ Maven AI system is being formally adopted by the U.S. military, securing its long-term use for identifying and tracking targets, according to a directive from Deputy War Secretary Steve Feinberg.

In a letter to senior Pentagon officials and military commanders, Feinberg said integrating Maven’s Smart System would equip warfighters “with the latest tools necessary to detect, deter, and dominate our adversaries in all domains.”

The transition is expected to be completed by the end of the current fiscal year in September. Maven, a command-and-control platform that processes battlefield data and identifies targets, already serves as the military’s primary AI operating system.

Designating the system as a program of record is expected to accelerate adoption across all branches while securing stable, long-term funding. Oversight of Maven will shift from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office within 30 days, with future contracting to be handled by the Army.

Feinberg said the move reflects a broader strategic priority, writing that “It is imperative that we invest now and with focus to deepen the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across the Joint Force and establish AI-enabled decision-making as the cornerstone of our strategy.”
