Three more Republican governors authorized National Guard deployments to Washington on Monday as part of President Trump’s campaign to curb crime and strengthen immigration enforcement in the capital. The new commitments from Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana brought the total number of states participating to six, with more than 1,100 Guard troops now assigned to the effort.
Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee expanded the Guard presence Monday, with Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s office saying troops would assist with monument security, safety patrols, federal facility protection and traffic control. The statement added the Guard “are ready to assist as long as needed.” Other commitments include 300 to 400 troops from West Virginia, 200 from South Carolina and 150 from Ohio.
“D.C. has been under siege from thugs and killers, but now, D.C. is back under Federal Control where it belongs,” Trump wrote on his social media platform after issuing the order. “The White House is in charge. The Military and our Great Police will liberate this City, scrape away the filth, and make it safe, clean, habitable and beautiful once more!”
