Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., died Saturday night at the age of 71 after what his office described as a brief and sudden illness, according to a statement released early Sunday.

Emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill home following a reported cardiac arrest. Radio traffic indicated CPR was in progress. Photos from the scene showed paramedics transporting Graham by stretcher to a waiting ambulance as police and fire crews responded.

A senior aide said there had been no indication Graham was feeling unwell before his death. He had been scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, where he had been a frequent guest over the years.

His office said Graham’s family appreciates the prayers and support and requested privacy during this difficult time.
