House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is demanding interviews with multiple Justice Department officials, accusing them of weaponizing the agency. Jordan is seeking testimony from several figures linked to President Trump’s criminal cases.
Though the request included top prosecutors from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office, Smith himself was not included in his requests. Among those requested for an interview is former special counsel David Weiss, who previously testified before the committee about his investigation into Hunter Biden. This would be Weiss’s first appearance since releasing a brief report summarizing his probe into Joe Biden’s son.
Jordan also called for testimony from senior prosecutors J.P. Cooney and Thomas Windom. Windom played a leading role in Trump’s election “interference” trial, while Cooney was involved in the president’s criminal cases before being dismissed by Trump’s DOJ leadership. Jordan’s letter describes Windom as a current DOJ employee.
In a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Jordan claimed that “former Special Counsel Jack Smith and his team, including Cooney and Windom, orchestrated a partisan and politically motivated prosecution of President Donald Trump and his co-defendants,” arguing their actions undermined the integrity of the Justice Department.
Jordan has previously targeted Cooney, requesting internal DOJ files on the prosecutor. In his letter to Weiss, he criticized the former special counsel’s final report, asserting it failed to address key topics and demanding additional testimony.
Jordan also requested interviews with other DOJ attorneys involved in cases related to abortion clinic threats and the prosecution of former Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.), among others.
