House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan announced Monday night that former special counsel Jack Smith will testify publicly before the committee later this month.
The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, January 22, at 10 a.m. Eastern. Smith’s appearance follows a closed-door deposition he gave last month related to his investigations into President Trump’s handling of classified materials and efforts to challenge the 2020 presidential election.
In his closed-door deposition, Smith said parts of former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson’s January 6 testimony were based on second- or third-hand information rather than firsthand observation, and he told lawmakers that if he were acting as a defense attorney he would seek to exclude some of her testimony as hearsay.
He also said the events of January 6 would not have occurred without President Trump’s actions and that the evidence showed Trump was “by a large measure the most culpable and most responsible person” in the scheme to overturn the 2020 election.
Smith noted that he had sought a public hearing earlier to “correct mischaracterizations” about his work and the career prosecutors and agents on his team.
