Israel urges NATO to expel Turkey after Erdogan’s threats of war intervention

by | Jul 29, 2024

Israel's foreign minister has called on NATO to expel Turkey following threats by President Tayyip Erdogan to “enter” Israel, similar to past actions in Libya and Nagorno-Karabakh.

In response to Erdogan's threats and rhetoric, Foreign Minister Israel Katz instructed diplomats to engage with NATO members to seek condemnation of Turkey and demand its expulsion from the alliance, according to a statement from the ministry.

Erdogan, who has been critical of Israel's actions in Gaza, suggested that Turkey might take similar actions against Israel as it did in Karabakh and Libya, although he did not specify what kind of intervention he was considering.

Katz likened Erdogan's threats to those made by Saddam Hussein and warned that Erdogan should remember the consequences Hussein faced.

Katz also stated that Turkey, by hosting the Hamas headquarters responsible for attacks on Israel, has aligned itself with the Iranian axis of evil, which includes Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis in Yemen.

Relations between Israel and Turkey, once close regional allies, have been deteriorating for more than a decade. Despite significant bilateral trade, which has reached billions of dollars annually, Turkey recently announced it would halt all trade with Israel until the conflict in Gaza ends and aid can flow freely.
