Israel is preparing for a limited ground incursion into southern Lebanon, according to a U.S. official, a Biden administration representative, and a source familiar with the planning.
The operation could begin imminently, with Israeli officials informing the U.S. that the incursion might start as early as today.
The mission aims to push Hezbollah forces away from Israel’s border and target their infrastructure, including weapon stockpiles, the sources explained. The operation is expected to be short-term, lasting days rather than weeks, with a limited geographical reach.
Probing operations are already underway, according to a U.S. official, with Israeli Special Forces conducting small-scale ground missions. Combat engineers and additional troops are in place for tasks such as breaching. While five brigades are forward deployed, not all are expected to cross the border.
The operation, described as limited in both duration and scope, will focus on Hezbollah’s stockpiles, weapons, and underground facilities. Initially, Israel had planned a broader invasion, but after U.S. officials urged reconsideration during discussions over the weekend, the plan was scaled back.
Despite these adjustments, the Biden administration remains concerned that the mission could escalate. Biden continues to push for a cease-fire, the administration official added.
