Hunter Biden to testify behind closed doors as part of Republican impeachment inquiry

by | Feb 28, 2024

Hunter Biden will be asked questions by members of two GOP-led House committees on Wednesday during a closed-door deposition that he had objected to participating in for months.

The House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight Committee, the two panels that have been overseeing Joe Biden’s impeachment inquiry, are holding the deposition, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.

The deposition will not be recorded on video. Considering interviews with other members of the Biden family's business associates and witnesses were all captured on camera, this was a significant concession from Republicans.

Although Republican Oversight Committee members have previously called Biden's testimony the “crescendo” of the House impeachment inquiry, Comer said the investigation would not be over until there were more subpoenas and witnesses to come, but he provided no information about who those might be. According to him, congressional investigators “continue to follow the facts to inform legislative changes to federal ethics laws and determine whether articles of impeachment are appropriate.”

A source with knowledge of the preparations for the Republican House Oversight Committee said a transcript of Hunter Biden's deposition would be made available “quickly” and that Biden's attorneys would have the opportunity to review it in advance. The source added that “sometime in the next few months” the investigation would produce a report with legislative or other recommendations and potential criminal referrals.
