The director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency has referred California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to the Justice Department for a possible federal criminal investigation over alleged mortgage and tax fraud tied to a Washington, D.C., residence.
Bill Pulte sent a letter Wednesday to Attorney General Pam Bondi alleging Swalwell may have submitted false or misleading information on loan documents. The matter has also been forwarded to the agency’s acting inspector general.
The referral claims Swalwell declared his primary residence as Washington, D.C., while securing several million dollars in loans and refinancing. It calls for an investigation into potential mortgage fraud, state and local tax fraud, insurance fraud, and any related offenses.
Pulte previously submitted criminal referrals to the Justice Department regarding mortgage fraud allegations involving other prominent Democratic figures, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook.
