House Republicans sue Attorney General Garland for Biden interview audio

by | Jul 1, 2024

House Republicans filed a lawsuit on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against Attorney General Merrick Garland, seeking the audio recordings of former special counsel Robert Hur's 2023 interview with Joe Biden.

The lawsuit represents a significant escalation in the GOP's ongoing dispute with the administration over the recordings.

The GOP-led House Judiciary Committee is requesting the court to compel Garland to release the audio recordings, arguing that his refusal to do so is unjustified. The Justice Department has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

Republicans highlighted a line from Hur's report suggesting Biden would be seen by a jury as a sympathetic elderly man with a poor memory, emphasizing the importance of the audio recordings over written transcripts in understanding Biden's demeanor during the interview.
