Governor Hochul announces plans to deploy National Guard in New York City’s subway system as part of crackdown on crime

by | Mar 6, 2024

Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that New York National Guard troops and New York State Police troopers will be deployed into the subway system to enhance safety for riders following a surge in transit crime.

The plan entails the deployment of 750 National Guard members, along with 250 State Police officers and Mass Transit Authority Police, into the subway system.

The decision follows New York City Mayor Eric Adams' directive last month to add an extra 1,000 officers to the subways in response to a 45% increase in crime in January 2024 compared to the same period last year.
