The head of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia, Peter J. Skandalakis, has named himself special prosecutor in the 2020 Georgia election interference case against President Trump. Skandalakis said he stepped in after efforts to find a replacement for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who was removed in December 2024, were unsuccessful.
“Several prosecutors were contacted and, while all were respectful and professional, each declined the appointment,” Skandalakis said, adding he would not identify them out of respect for their privacy.
Willis was removed by a state appeals court for an “appearance of impropriety.” The 2‑1 ruling said, “this is the rare case in which disqualification is mandated and no other remedy will suffice to restore public confidence in the integrity of these proceedings.”
Trump’s lead Georgia attorney, Steve Sadow, welcomed the appointment, calling it a “fair and impartial review” and asserting that the case should be dismissed. “This politically charged prosecution has to come to an end,” he said.
