FBI and DHS issue alert for potential ‘follow-up or retaliatory’ attacks following Trump assassination attempt

by | Jul 16, 2024

Law enforcement agencies nationwide have been put on alert by the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI following an attempted assassination of President Trump. The agencies issued a bulletin warning of potential “follow-on or retaliatory” attacks at upcoming events related to the 2024 presidential election.

Emphasizing the need for vigilance, the bulletin urged local, state, and federal authorities to report any suspicious activities.

The bulletin highlighted concerns over threats made in online communities in response to the assassination attempt, which occurred during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania. Despite ongoing investigations into the motives behind the attack, authorities noted the divisive nature of current public discourse as a contributing factor to the heightened threat environment.

Political rallies and campaign events were identified as attractive targets for “lone actors” or small extremist groups, posing challenges in their detection due to the personal nature of radicalization. Prior to the recent incident, federal authorities had observed various politically motivated attacks and disruptive tactics aimed at election-related targets.

The bulletin also detailed preliminary information about the assailant, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who had purchased ammunition and received suspicious packages prior to the attack. Improvised explosive devices were discovered in his vehicle and residence, underscoring the dynamic and heightened threat environment surrounding both President Trump and Joe Biden.

Additionally, a report from the Joint Regional Intelligence Center in California highlighted a rise in threats against public officials in recent years, emphasizing the escalating nature of the threat landscape. While threats alone do not always translate into actual violence, the report suggested that those close to individuals showing signs of radicalization may play a crucial role in early detection and prevention efforts.

As the Republican National Convention proceeded to officially nominate Trump for the upcoming election, law enforcement remains on high alert, prepared to mitigate potential threats to election-related entities across the country.
