Denise Cheung, head of the criminal division at the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office, has stepped down, according to four sources. Her departure comes a day after President Trump nominated Ed Martin to lead the office permanently. Martin, who had been serving in an interim capacity, has supported overturning all January 6-related cases brought by the office.
She apparently resigned after rejecting a request from her Trump-appointed superiors to initiate a grand jury investigation into an Environmental Protection Agency funding decision under the Biden administration. The directive came from Emil Bove, the department’s acting deputy attorney general. She deemed the investigation premature, refused, and resigned.
