Biden has again declared his intention to stay in the race in a letter to congressional Democrats on Monday, addressing calls from some allies for him to withdraw.
This declaration marks the beginning of a pivotal week, as Biden faces waning support from Democratic lawmakers and concerns that his persistence might result in significant losses to Trump and his supporters in the November elections.
Amid these challenges, many Democrats are calling for immediate and tangible evidence of political vitality from Biden. However, he is unable to ramp up his campaign efforts as he is hosting the 75th NATO summit in Washington, where much of the downtown area is secured. His aides have assured an intensified campaign schedule starting the week of July 15, though there are fears it may be too late.
“The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now. And it's time for it to end,” Biden says. “We have one job. And that is to beat Donald Trump. We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It is time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
