Sally Buzbee, the first female executive editor of the Washington Post, has stepped down, the newspaper announced Sunday night.
Matthew Murray, former editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal, will serve as interim executive editor until after the 2024 presidential election. At that time, Robert Winnett, currently deputy editor at The Telegraph, will assume the role.
Alongside this leadership change, the Bezos-owned publication will undergo a significant restructuring. The newsroom will be divided into three distinct divisions: the main newsroom, the editorial page, and a newly established “third newsroom” dedicated to service and social media journalism, operating independently from the core news operations.
Upon Winnett's takeover from Murray post-election, Murray will lead this new third newsroom. This comprehensive reorganization aims to enhance the publication's adaptability and focus in an evolving media landscape.
