Wire services such as Reuters and Bloomberg News will no longer hold a permanent position in the small group of reporters assigned to cover President Trump, the White House announced Tuesday.
Traditionally, the pool includes roughly ten news organizations that accompany the president to events in the Oval Office and on domestic and international trips, providing immediate coverage of statements and exchanges. Wire services, which play a key role in distributing fast, real-time reporting to other media outlets, have typically maintained a consistent presence in the group.
Under the new policy, wire services will now be placed into a broader rotation with around 30 other newspaper and print organizations, losing their standing as permanent pool members.
According to guidance shared with Reuters, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt will now determine the makeup of the press pool on a daily basis. A White House official said this change is intended “to ensure that the president’s message reaches targeted audiences and that outlets with applicable subject-matter expertise are present as events warrant.” The official also stated that eligibility for pool inclusion will not depend on an outlet’s editorial stance.
