President Trump said Tuesday that his administration is preparing to halt federal funding to sanctuary cities and states beginning Feb. 1, a move that could strip billions of dollars from jurisdictions that restrict cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
Trump said during a speech in Detroit that sanctuary jurisdictions were guilty of shielding criminals while putting American citizens at risk.
He said the policies encourage lawlessness and abuse of public systems. “It breeds fraud and crime and all of the other problems that come. So we’re not making any payment to anybody that supports sanctuary cities.”
When pressed later by reporters on the scope of the funding cuts, Trump added, “You’ll see. It will be significant.”
