Trump campaign calls for earlier, more debates with Biden

by | Apr 11, 2024

On Thursday, the Trump campaign penned a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, advocating for an expedited timeline for scheduled debates between President Trump and Biden. They also proposed an increase in the number of debates between the two candidates before Election Day.

For the 2024 cycle, there are currently three presidential debates scheduled, commencing in September, along with one vice presidential debate.

Trump's campaign advisers highlighted that by the proposed date of the first debate on September 16, it is anticipated that over 1 million Americans would have already utilized early voting to cast their ballots. They noted that approximately 3 million individuals may have voted by the time of the second debate on October 1.

Despite his previous reluctance to participate in the GOP primary debates and his contentious history with the Commission on Presidential Debates, Trump has consistently pledged for weeks to debate Biden “any time, any place.”

Biden's campaign has refrained from committing to participating in the debates thus far, and Biden himself has responded with mostly tongue-in-cheek remarks when questioned about the possibility.

“It depends on his behavior,” Biden stated last month when queried about debating Trump.
