Trump Announces 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos, Parts and Steel Starting 2027

by | Aug 24, 2026

President Trump said Monday that beginning January 1, 2027, tariffs on all cars, trucks, automotive parts, and steel from Canada will rise to 50%.

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Canada of long imposing “ridiculously high tariffs” on American farmers and farm products that created a $60 billion trade deficit. He said the situation is no longer sustainable.

Trump stated that companies that build in the United States will face zero tariffs. He added that Canada will no longer be treated “like a State”, saying the U.S. does not need Canada while Canada does 95% of its business with the United States.

The news comes after Trump last week announced he was pausing the 50% tariffs on Canada after the two sides reached a tentative deal, while also eyeing a possible Keystone XL revival.
