Syria Opens Direct Talks With Israel as Germany Breaks With Longstanding Support

by | May 27, 2025

Israel and Syria have entered direct, face-to-face talks aimed at easing tensions and preventing border conflict—a striking development in the relationship between two long-standing adversaries. At the same time, Germany has sharply shifted its stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza, warning of a possible halt to arms exports and condemning the deepening humanitarian crisis.

According to Reuters’ reporting, Israel and Syria have recently engaged in direct, face-to-face talks aimed at easing tensions and preventing conflict along their shared borders. This marks a significant shift in relations between the two adversaries. Encouraged by the U.S., the new Syrian leadership is reportedly open to establishing ties with Israel, which has reduced its military pressure on Syria in recent weeks. The talks, led on the Syrian side by senior security official Ahmad al-Dalati, have included multiple meetings in border areas, including Israeli-controlled territory.

The discussions are primarily focused on joint security to prevent clashes and reduce Israeli military incursions, but sources suggest they may evolve into broader political agreements. The U.S. has played a key role in shifting regional dynamics, particularly after a pivotal meeting between President Trump and Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa. Syria has also taken steps to signal goodwill, such as engaging Jewish representatives and cooperating on historical matters. While normalization is not yet on the agenda, both sides appear to be moving toward a more stable, peaceful coexistence.

In a separate development, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul warned that Germany’s historic support for Israel must not be misused, citing intolerable conditions in Gaza such as massive air strikes and shortage of necessities. Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed this sentiment, labeling the ongoing military strikes as unjustifiable. Though not a complete break, this marks Germany’s most serious rebuke of Israel, reflecting changing public opinion and political pressure from within its coalition government. The government reiterated its commitment to Israel’s security but emphasized that it would not supply weapons that could contribute to humanitarian violations.
