State Department Developing “Freedom.gov” Portal To Bypass Foreign Censorship

by | Feb 19, 2026

The U.S. Department of State is building an online portal designed to let users in Europe and other regions access content banned by their governments, including material labeled as hate speech or terrorist propaganda.

The website will operate at freedom.gov, and officials have discussed adding a virtual private network (VPN) feature that would make traffic appear to originate from the United States while not tracking user activity. The initiative is being led by Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers and was initially expected to debut at the Munich Security Conference before being delayed.

A State Department spokesperson said, “Digital freedom is a priority for the State Department, and that includes the proliferation of privacy and censorship-circumvention technologies like VPNs.”

The project aligns with the Trump administration’s broader foreign policy focus on free speech and concerns about the suppression of conservative voices online in Europe and Brazil. U.S. officials have criticized European policies they say restrict right-wing politicians in Romania, Germany, and France and argue laws such as the EU’s Digital Services Act and Britain’s Online Safety Act limit speech.

Sources said Edward Coristine, a former member of the Department of Government Efficiency, is also involved in the project through the National Design Studio. Federal registry records show the freedom.gov domain was registered January 12 and currently displays the studio’s logo alongside the message, “Freedom is coming. Information is power. Reclaim your human right to free expression. Get ready.”
