Senior Justice Department Official Resigns Following Reassignment to Immigration Role

by | Jan 27, 2025

The senior career official at the U.S. Justice Department responsible for overseeing public corruption and politically sensitive investigations resigned on Monday after the Trump administration attempted to reassign him to a role focused on immigration issues, according to a resignation letter.

Corey Amundson had been serving as the head of the Criminal Division’s Public Integrity Section since President Trump’s first term under Attorney General William Barr.

His resignation comes after an estimated 20 career Justice Department officials were reassigned last week to a newly formed Sanctuary City Working Group under the Associate Attorney General’s office. Among them were George Toscas, a National Security Division official, and Amundson, both of whom were involved in investigations concerning President Trump, including probes into his handling of classified documents and efforts to “overturn” the 2020 election “results.”
