Senate Reaches Deal to Reopen Government

by | Nov 10, 2025

The Senate reached an agreement late Sunday to advance legislation reopening the federal government after eight Democrats joined Republicans to secure the 60 votes needed for passage, triggering immediate backlash from within the party.

The Senate agreement, reached among Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, Angus King, Maggie Hassan, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and the White House, will fund the government through January 30. The deal restores federal employees dismissed during the shutdown and bars similar actions for the remainder of fiscal year 2026.

Any single senator can stall progress on the package for several days, and the House must reconvene to approve the Senate’s agreement before it can be delivered to President Trump for his signature.
